Temple Terrace proposes a new safety complex

Emergency services could be finding a new home in Temple Terrace.
While it may look like an empty field right now, that could be changing quickly as the City of Temple Terrace proposes a new $50 million safety complex.
The complex would become the new home for the Temple Terrace Police Department and would add a third fire station in the city.
Temple Terrace Police are currently located on the third floor of City Hall, a small office for the growth they have seen.
“In 1982, when we moved to the third floor of the police department, we had 21 sworn officers and 11 civilian positions. Now we have 57 officers and 20 civilian positions,” said Temple Terrace Police Chief Rob Staley.
The fire department has seen upgrades to its headquarters however; a third station would see response time increase even further.
“We’ve had the two fire stations for the last thirty years, and a little over thirty years, and the time now is to expand a little bit because we’re just not able to get to that eastern section as fast as we’d like to,” said Temple Terrace Fire Chief Ian Kemp.
City Hall has unanimously approved the construction.
Voters will have the final say with the vote being set for August.
USF engineering team is preparing for a competition
Original reporting by Jae Diehl

After a tough loss last year, one USF engineering team is determined to come back stronger.
The American Society of Civil Engineers Timber Strong build team is preparing for its upcoming competition.
From blueprints to build day, USF engineering students are putting their skills to the test.
The USF ASCE build team will head to Boca Raton this weekend to compete in Timber Strong, a student design-build competition.
Teams from universities across the region must design and build a two-story wood building.
“It has just been a lot of hours and love and time put into the project, so I’d be really excited to see how we do. Hopefully we do well. Hopefully we win,” said Senior Project Manager Margret Jones.
Last year was USF’s first year in the competition, where they finished last.
This year, they’re hoping to see improvement and hope that their hard work speaks for itself.
For these students, the competition is about more than trophies.
“Being able to work with other people who have the same motive and passion for something as you is something that you can’t find in class,” said Junior Build Team Memver Aiden Bolado.
From design to competition, these students are building more than a project, they’re building their futures.
