Crisis Center of Tampa Bay gets $35k grant
Original reporting by Hannah Lau Gleciano
At the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, a new $35k grant will help cover the costs of sexual assault exams for teenagers, services that can be crucial in the hours or even days after an assault but are often out of reach without the proper funding.
Suncoast Credit Union, a longtime partner of the crisis center, awarded the money.
50 exams were performed on patients ages 13 to 17 last year, according to the center.
It is also the only place in Hillsborough County where patients 13 and older can access this healthcare.
“We like to recognize that sexual assault is a crime of power and control. Power and control being taken away from the victim. So, when the victim comes here for services, we like to immediately start re-empowering them,” said Director of Sexual Assault Services Gina Dickerson.
Each assessment costs the non-profit over $1,700 but is free of charge for patients.
The center also works closely with the Tampa PD to help with investigations.
Other services available to survivors include trauma counselling and substance misuse support.
“Not every young survivor is going to be believed by their family and friends. And so, it’s important that they’re able to seek out our services,” said Dickerson.
Walk-ins and appointments are welcome and completely confidential.
If you or someone you know needs help, the crisis hotline, 211, operates 24/7.
Hillsborough County $95 million plan to help with flooding

Original reporting by Zoe Sax
Hillsborough County has approved a $95 million plan to help address flooding and drainage issues.
The plan includes 10 different projects that aim to improve localized stormwater systems, modify outdated sewer infrastructure, restore coastal habitats and clear out debris from canals that flow into Tampa Bay.
Flooding has been a huge concern in Tampa since Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024.
The improvements from the plan will significantly decrease sewer overflows and flooding, which will in turn protect homes, businesses and the environment, according to county officials.
