Clock Tower with Sky behind it.

TAMPA- Hillsborough High School alumni and community gathered to repair the historic clock tower.

The school’s memorial clock tower was first introduced to the public in 1949. On Saturday, the community gathered together to celebrate and dedicate the tower to the 143 alumni who were killed in World War II.

The clock hasn’t chimed or worked in the past decade but with the help of the community and alumni, $50,000 was raised for a restoration project.

The Terrier alumni volunteer group led the project through a social media campaign. After just five weeks, enough money was raised to restore the clock tower. Alumni and volunteer Darlene Fabelo said that collecting the money was the easiest part.

“The money part was the easiest part of all. Honestly, to raise the money, and I thought it was gonna be the hardest, and it wasn’t. And people wanted to connect with that clock and they wanted to be a part of that history to go ‘Hey I gave money to that clock for our war heroes.’”

At the dedication, a large crowd gathered on the school’s front lawn to show support and celebrate the group’s accomplishments by honoring the structure’s history.

“I want you to think about your Terrier pride, but I also want you to remember these very very courageous veterans who fought for our nation,” said Hillsborough County School Board member Nadia Combs.
