TAMPA – A women’s online magazine club, Her Campus, hosted a mocktail slumber party
event where members mixed drinks inspired by popular female artists while building strong
relationships with one another on Sept. 23 at USF.

Event attendees shared the importance of having a support system of uplifting women to help
them dealing with the stressful college environment. They appreciated the ability to interact with
like-minded students who have similar interests and hobbies. Her Campus had given them a
space where they can be themselves and have fun with young college women. Amy Yacoub, 19,
joined Her Campus as a writer because of her passion for writing.

“They’re able to lift you up when you need it, basically be that backbone for you,” said Yacoub.

Members came dressed in pajamas ready to create themed mocktails and listen to playlists by
Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, Olivia Rodrigo, Lana Del Rey and Charli XCX.
The executive board asked for input from club members on the mocktail ideas. Yacoub designed
the “Lana Cherry Cola” drink, which was Coca-Cola Cherry, vanilla ice cream and cherries.

Her Campus is an online magazine geared towards encouraging young college women to grow in
their writing skills, social media and advertising skills and make new friends. It is similar to a
sorority sisterhood without the added cost of membership fees.

Karla Evangelista De La Rosa, 20, is the editor-in-chief of the Her Campus writing team. She is
studying psychology but also enjoys writing in her free time. She joined the club as a freshman
in Spring 2023. “I love reading everyone’s stories. People have such amazing ideas about pop culture and their own experiences,” said Evangelista De La Rosa.

Many current members were unaware that Her Campus was an online magazine before joining
their chapter at USF but were excited to get involved. The skills needed to create content for the
club lean towards mass communication and writing majors, however, these majors are not
required to join the team. The club is open to anyone interested in public relations, writing and
social media.

Hayley Ramesar, 22, currently serves as the president of USF’s Her Campus chapter. She is
majoring in industrial engineering.

“I was really interested in writing even though it wasn’t my major,” said Ramesar. “I was
looking for girl clubs to join. I came across [Her Campus] and it was totally up my alley.”

The club produces regular online content for their website and social media accounts. They write
stories on culture, wellness, life, career and more. If writing is not the student’s strong suit, they
can contribute through graphic designing, event planning or marketing ideas.

Her Campus hosts events every couple weeks. Their next event is a thrift swap where students
can exchange their old clothing for newer clothing.

Since the club is built around an online platform, there aren’t many opportunities for members to
meet one another face to face. Planning these events, such as a mocktail slumber party, allows
these online creators to come together and make meaningful connections with other women.

“I love that this was primarily a social event, so we get to meet the girls at Her Campus,” said
Yacoub.
