TAMPA- USF Health hosted an event during wellness week to encourage students to eat healthy foods on Jan 21.
The MCOM OSA held the Treat Yourself event for the wellbeing of others which included making a yogurt parfait. Although this was a small event, it was something students and professors could walk by and get a nice treat while also learning about the 10 principles of healthy eating.
Kabeel Dosani, the assistant director of wellness at USF Health, monitored this event along with others that were going on throughout the week.
“I think a lot of diet kind of culture emphasizes, you know, things that are very black and white, all or nothing”, said Dosani, “This is a way to be like, hey you know we’ve got some we’ve got chocolate chips, we’ve got fruits, we’ve got a mix of options for folks to be kind of gentle with themselves.”
According to Dr. Frederick Malibiran, a family medicine physician in Brandon, gaining a patient’s trust starts with making direct eye contact with them and not seeming rushed but actively listening instead. “I see many patients with high cholesterol refusing to take prescription medications due to side effects of statins.” He recommends foods such as fatty fish, apples, strawberries, soy, nuts, eggplant, okra, beans, and oats to lower cholesterol levels.

The wellness week events started in 2024. The other events of the week are on different topics including social, physical, and emotional. The different events are Race at your Pace, Vision Board Creating, Mindfulness Workshop, and Mocktail Mixer: Alcohol safety.
