Philadelphia Phillies’ fans boost Clearwater’s economy
Major League Baseball spring training is back in full swing this week, and with it comes a home run for Clearwater’s economy.
BayCare Ballpark is the home of the Philadelphia Phillies during the spring.
Local businesses anxiously anticipate the return of the team every February as its presence also brings a significant boost to the local economy.
Scott Palmer is a club ambassador who has worked for the Phillies for more than 20 years. He said he has seen and experienced the benefits that the team brings to the city.
“Baseball in spring training is a major part of Clearwater,” he said.
Palmer said fans contribute to the local economy boost by visiting businesses, gas stations and restaurants.
The Phillies bring in over seven thousand fans per game, most of whom come from out of state, according to a 2018 Florida Sports Foundation study.
Among these fans is Gracie Cleveland, a native of Philadelphia who enjoys the fun and “super cool” atmosphere of spring training.
“Being here in Clearwater is super personable to see the players kind of more upfront in action, and getting to see their personalities come out a little bit more when it’s not so serious,” Cleveland said.
Veronica Estopiñan, a bartender at a local Mellow Mushroom, said she looks forward to spring training every year because she enjoys serving the fans.
Although lunches can be slow throughout the year, Phillies fans “flood” the restaurant in the spring.
“Which is pretty good because we enjoy them,” Estopiñan said. “They’re very lively.”
