Hillsborough County Public Libraries installed a new library card policy for children under 17.
The change lets parents limit what books their children check out. The policy aims to protect children from mature content without banning books outright.
“Even though I don’t support restricting books for kids, at least the library has sort of put in a compromise,” says local mother Kendra Langlie. “Hopefully parents who do want to restrict what their kids read will feel comfortable with that and they won’t want to take books away from the rest of the kids.”
Books will be ranked in tiers based on their material. A minor’s age group and card type will decide which tiers they are allowed to access. People qualify for an adult card at age 17, and this card system no longer applies.
Parents can cancel a card at any time.
