On a Friday at 8 p.m., people begin lining up outside the doors at Skateworld of Tampa, awaiting the final game of Tampa Roller Derby’s 2024 Season: The Stache Bash. This game was a championship between the top two teams, the Black Widows and the Cigar City Mafia, to declare a victory for the season. Both teams made a valiant effort over two hours of battle, but Cigar City Mafia came out on top.

The Stache Bash, Tampa Roller Derby’s championship game that occurs at the end of every season, has been a staple within the league for nearly two decades. Skaters and audience members alike are encouraged to either grow out their mustaches or stick on a fake one, with a “Best Mustache” competition occurring during half-time.

Before the game, Mafia skater Allegra Kartha, who skates under the name Kali Kunjamma, discussed what roller derby means to them. They said community, friendship, and encouragement between teammates are deeply important to the league. They also talked about work outside of derby and how this sport is integral to their self-care.
