Police hope to step up their game and prevent drivers from speeding across the St. Pete and South Tampa bridge.

“Obviously, street racing and speeding have been a problem across the bay area, to include the Gandy Boulevard and Gandy bridge area,” said Lt. Jason Levey from the St. Pete Police Department.

In line with the lieutenant’s concerns, Tampa and St. Pete law enforcement teamed up last weekend to stop speeding on the Gandy bridge. The team-up led to over 200 speeding tickets being written.

Tickets were given to drivers going over the 55 mph speed limit. Levey said the majority of speeders were going 20 miles or more over the speed limit when cited.

Most stops are being made where the bridge connects to St. Petersburg. Patrol cars position themselves there to catch speeders coming off or onto the bridge.

The choice to increase speed traps was made with the holiday season in mind. Levey hopes that the change will help keep people safe as traffic increases.

AAA predicts seasonal travel boom

AAA predicts almost 3 million Floridians will be traveling 50 miles or more during the start of the holiday season.

There is expected to be 87,000 more travelers this holiday than last year. Wednesday Nov. 22, will be the busiest travel day this season.

Most travelers will be on the road as opposed to flying. Which makes sense since gas will be cheaper than last Thanksgiving. The national average cost per gallon of gas has been dropping since summertime.

Tampa is listed as a top domestic destination for the season.
