This comes after a seventh place finish at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational where the Bulls beat strong programs like Michigan State and Purdue.
It was anything but a walk in the park.
“I saw a lot of nervous golf being played. It looks like everyone was a little bit worried and kind of in that avoidance mindset of how do I not lose this tournament? And that last day, we are able to snap back into pursuing what we want, which is making birdies, attacking the golf course and tracking down the teams above us,” said head coach, AJ Newell.
The coaches say they entered the tournament determined to win but the first round didn’t go how they planned. Emma Kim, the team leader at the Canadian Invitational, acknowledged something had to change.
“Because we played bad the first day, like second day, we were like, okay, we got this. We know the course, and we can play low, lower score on this course. So, I think going to the second round was a different mindset as a first round,” Kim said.
The change worked. Players Tiphani Knight and Regina Plascencia led the team tying for sixth with a combined 14 birdies resulting in a strong second place performance.
The next tournament for the Bulls will be the White Sands Invitational in the Bahamas, taking place from October 24 to the 26.
Bulls football on winning streak
The Bulls have an opportunity to capture their third straight win tonight while on the road against undefeated North Texas.
The Bulls jumped to #24 on the AP poll following the win against Charlotte last Friday. Fresh off a five-touchdown outing, Quarterback Byrum Brown now goes against a strong North Texas defense. The Mean Green’s 11 takeaways are tied for the seventh-most in the country.
Brown emphasizes the importance of staying disciplined and doing your job, “They’re very sound, they play aggressive, they rally to the ball. If we do our jobs, we’ll be right where we need to be.”
Kickoff against the Mean Green will be tonight at 7:30PM on ESPN2.
