Mā’ila Ikaika Castro Gantous was inspired to leave her small town of Hale’iwa in Hawai’i after conversations with her older sister, who, while still in school, visited Ecuador and other countries. Motivated by these stories, Gantous set a goal to save money for travel.

At age 21, after graduating from college, she planned her first international trip to Italy.

“If I can learn this much and gain outlook and perspective on myself and the world in just one trip, what more can I learn every time I go to another country?” Gantous said.

Now 32, Gantous has traveled to 12 countries since her first trip at 21 and does not plan on stopping anytime soon. She recommends Costa Rica to young travelers for its unique landscapes, affordability, beaches, rainforests, countryside, and sightseeing.

Although many people tend to travel when they are much older, getting ahead at a young age is an advantage you should consider before you start your career or family. Whether you’re from a small town, the city, or an island, “Just do it,” Gantous said. “Once you take that first trip, you’ll see that it’s possible, you’ll see it’s a lot easier than you think it is.”
