New road safety measures in Ybor

Original reporting by Hannah Lau

Crossing the street in Ybor City just got a little safer.

The City of Tampa is implementing new safety protocols following last year’s fatal accident on 7th Ave., where a reckless driver crashed into a popular bar, killing four pedestrians.

Part of the new safety features will be added bollards to create a barrier between roads and sidewalks to keep pedestrians protected.

Other upgrades include reduced speed limits, more parking options on the street and increased police presence.

“As the Transportation Services Director, the safety program falls under my area of responsibility um, and it’s been a priority with the city before I came to my role, and it remains a priority within the city now that I’m in my role,” said Transportation Services Director Adam Purcell.

As a long-term resident of Tampa, Purcell says that community feedback is always valued.

“I’m glad we can meet with and hear from the community. I’m glad that we could get their input on what they want to see for safety improvements,” said Purcell.

A press conference will be held next week to further discuss the improvements.

Purcell adds that residents and tourists can expect the remaining upgrades to be in place by the end of this year.
