Meals on Wheels Tampa: Giving back this holiday season

The organization prepares and delivers over 1,000 meals daily to seniors in need, many of whom have limited family support.

Meals on Wheels is adding an extra touch of holiday cheer this year. In addition to their daily meal deliveries, the organization sends out holiday gift bags filled with books, games and other thoughtful items. These gifts aim to bring joy to seniors who may be spending the holidays alone.

“For many of the people we serve, they don’t have family nearby and are often isolated. These gifts are significant to them and help make the holidays a little brighter,” said executive director Stephen King.

Meals on Wheels Tampa asks the community to support this initiative through donations and volunteering. Green donation boxes are set up throughout Tampa to collect items for the holiday gift bags. Donations are accepted until December 9, and the bags will be delivered on December 21.

As we approach the holiday season, Meals on Wheels Tampa offers an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of local seniors. Your support can help brighten the holidays for those in need through donating, volunteering, or spreading the word.

Why giving a pet as a holiday gift might not be a good idea

As the holidays approach, many consider surprising loved ones with a pet. However, experts caution that giving a pet as a gift may not always be the best choice.

Every year, millions of animals are surrendered to shelters, including pets given as gifts. According to the ASPCA, around 6.3 million animals enter U.S. shelters annually, many returning after the holidays. While pets are wonderful companions, they require a long-term commitment that may not be suitable for everyone, especially if given as an unexpected gift.

“Surprising someone with a puppy or kitten isn’t fair to the animal or the recipient. Pets are a huge responsibility, and many people aren’t ready for that kind of commitment,” said Rachel Bellis from PETA’s Cruelty Investigations Department.

Adopting a pet is a decision that should not be rushed, and careful thought is needed, regardless of the time of year.

Instead of surprising someone with a pet, consider donating to a local animal shelter, pet supplies or a pet adoption voucher. This allows the recipient to choose the pet that best suits their home and lifestyle.

Before giving a pet this holiday season, consider the responsibilities involved. To learn more about responsible pet adoption, visit local shelters like the Humane Society of Tampa Bay or review the ASPCA’s guidelines.
