Cold front damages strawberry harvest
Original reporting Zoey Patrick
Recent cold temperatures are raising concerns for local strawberry growers.
Strawberry season is typically in full swing this time of year in Tampa Bay, but recent overnight cold weather has made farmers keep an eye on their crops.
Record-low temperatures in the Tampa area have delayed the strawberries from ripening, meaning fewer strawberries are ready for harvest.
“Yes, it’s going to hurt the harvest… we’re down 40% at this particular time and I’m estimating in the next 10 days we’ll probably be down 55% below production where we should be,” said Passion Organics Farm Owner Jerry Wright.
This drop in production means fewer berries are moving from the fields to markets.
Prolonged cold can damage the blooms.
“Actually, because it has been warm the last couple of weeks… the berries have been growing pretty well again and he’s had the opportunity to plant a lot of new seeds and new starter plants and different vegetables,” said Passion Organics Farm Owner Sharon Wright.
Farmers are hopeful for a strong season and are encouraging the community to shop local.
Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program
Original reporting by Zoe Sax

Bored with your lawn? There’s a new program that can make your yard beautiful and environmentally friendly.
With the drought in Tampa still causing concern, the water department is launching a new Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program, or FLIP.
Every year, residents with the most water-efficient landscapes are recognized and have now inspired a new program.
“I thought, well, it’s really something that maybe needs done for curb appeal, or I think it’s the right thing to do for the environment or the landscape. But I didn’t really grasp how personally fulfilling it’s going to be for me,” said 2025 FILP winner Sue Manian.
FLIP is a three-part program that will help you create a new landscape.
“We’re very excited that we’re able to offer this rebate, something very, very unique for our area, I think. We’d love to see that room filled up with our irrigating customers who are ready to replace that lawn area,” said Water Conservation and Efficiency Team Leader Julia Palaschak.
