Howard Frankland Bridge opens to drivers and pedestrians

The Howard Frankland Bridge on I-275 is finally open to drivers after more than four years of construction.

The bridge, which was originally built in 1960, was rebuilt to expand the southbound lanes across the busy highway.

Construction began in 2020, with a budget of $865 million, and is expected to be completed next year.

The bridge opened to the public on Tuesday after Monday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Interstate resident engineer Austin Petersen said the bridge’s opening was a proud moment for him.

“Being able to open this new bridge allows taxpayers to see their money at work as well as use new facilities,” Petersen said. “It is a huge accomplishment.”

The bridge also received a separate lane for bikes and pedestrians, Petersen said.

“It’ll have aesthetic features as well for looking into the bay, so it will really be a nice feature for people who are wanting to get some exercise or just walk in the area,” he said.

More than 250,000 vehicles cross the Howard Frankland Bridge daily, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

That makes it the most heavily traveled bridge in the Bay Area.

Officials said they hope the new bridge will reduce congestion because of its four new express lanes.

Petersen said it is a “huge” commuter bridge.

“Obviously, people go to and from Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, so it’s very important,” he said.
