Harvest Hope Community Garden offers fresh produce and sustainability lessons
A local garden helps the community get healthy food straight from the source.
Harvest Hope Community Garden, located at Harvest Hope Park, is open every Friday from 9-11 a.m. for community members to get fresh home-grown food.
Harvest Hope is great for community members and volunteers alike, as it provides an opportunity to get involved and learn about growing food sustainably.
Madison McGrath, the garden manager, said it is essential to connect with and contribute to the community.
“We plant everything out here, not in the purpose of harvesting things to produce, but for the purpose of learning and teaching people about sustainable living and healthy lifestyle choices,” McGrath said.
McGrath said the garden is a place where community members can connect with each other.
The garden grows a variety of vegetables that volunteers grow, harvest and package to give out to community members.
Elijah Algarin-Martinez, a student volunteer from USF, said helping others is heartwarming.
“It’s just the purpose of the garden,” Algarin-Martinez said. “I think the community learning things about how to grow their own food and get their own fresh produce when they may not be able to afford it themselves is something that’s kind of priceless.
Algarin-Martinez said the purpose of the garden is what makes them return so often.
“It’s kind of just the age-old saying, if you give a man a fish, you’ll feed him for a day, but if you teach him how to fish, you’ll feed him for a lifetime,” Algarin-Martinez said. “I think it’s very important.”
