Temple Terrace celebrates centennial with murals and monthly events
The city of Temple Terrace was founded in 1925. This year, the town is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
May 28 is the official centennial date, but Cori Collins, supervisor of the Parks & Recreation division, said to expect a year full of celebration.
“That centennial committee was formed a couple of years ago… and they were tasked to make a year of celebration,” Collins said.
She said the murals scattered all over Temple Terrace, such as the ones on the side of City Hall and street corners, are part of the celebration.
The murals were brought into Temple Terrace because the town is a very art-friendly community.
“The committee decided on five murals to scatter around the city that showcase the work of local artists and the history of Temple Terrace,” Collins said.
One of the murals is located at the Family Recreation Complex. It is named “Happiness Has Wings,” and it showcases three colorful bats flying.

City Hall has two different murals, which showcase a vintage postcard and River Hills Park.
The Omar K. Lightfoot Recreation Center has a community mural, and Fire Station 1 has a firefighter mural.
In addition to the murals, celebrations will occur each month with a centennial twist.
Collins said Temple Terrace’s anniversary will be celebrated all year long, whether it’s giving away 100 orange trees for Earth Day or 100 cupcakes at the Touch a Truck event.
“We have a dive-in movie in June, we’ll have our Halloween event, we’ll have our Christmas event,” Collins said. “Everything will be tying in with a little bit of a splash of the centennial.”
The next centennial event is River Jam, which will be held at River Hills Park on May 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The festival is free to attend and will have local bands, food and arts and crafts.
There will also be an official centennial presentation with Mayor Andy Ross at noon.
