Citrus County launches innovative program to combat teacher shortages
The goal is to inspire local students to pursue a career and eventually return to teaching in their community.
“We can send students through our schools, get them interested in teaching, and have them return and work in Citrus County,” said former superintendent Sam Himmel, who initiated the program.
Citrus County is focused on retaining current teachers and training future educators. Principals like Mollie Chandler of Lecanto Elementary go the extra mile to show appreciation, offering small gestures like a cereal breakfast to make teachers feel valued.
The program will accept 24 students per high school, with academic requirements for admission. Graduating seniors from the class of 2026 can apply during the summer of their junior year.
By growing local talent and supporting current educators, Citrus County is working to ensure a bright future for its schools.
