Hillsborough County is making a significant investment in the USF Fletcher District.
County commissioners unanimously approved $24 million to aid in the construction of the mixed-use development.
The district will include housing, academic spaces, a hotel, resturants and more.
The funds are coming from the community investment tax and will be used for safety improvements like turning lanes, roadway upgrades and a pedestrian bridge over Fletcher Ave.
Phase one is expected to be completed by 2028.

New FL law protecting water preserves
Original reporting by Grace Senecal

A new law that will soon take effect in Florida, is working to protect the state’s famous waters.
SB 302, also known as the Coastal Resiliency Bill, unanimously passed in the Senate and the House.
This bill protects the Terra Ceia Aquatic preserve, right beneath the Skyway Bridge.
This law incentives replanting mangroves, creating living sea walls and informing the community about a dredging project in public waters.
“Part of the reason that makes Tampa Bay a great place to live is this beautiful body of water right in our backyard, or some people’s front yard for that matter,” said USF Director of Maritime and Port Studies Dr. Mark Luther.
