Tampa restaurants give back

In response to the backlog of SNAP benefits, several restaurants in Tampa are offering free meals to children.

Blind Tiger Coffee Roasters , are giving away a free meal bag to any kid at any of it’s eight locations. Co-founder Roberto Torres talked about how this innovative has been going.

“We had fed about like 400 people roughly in the first 10 days or 11 of the campaign, so it’s been widley accepted,” Torres said. “Part of the effort is letting people know that this is available.”

While the fate of snap benefits remains uncertain, places like the one behind me are offering free food with no questions asked.

Other restaurants have also chimed in. The Violet Stone Pizzeria, located in St. Petersburg, offers what they call the “shutdown special” between 4 to 5 p.m. daily. Owner Dan Fekete shared why this is personal for him.

“We actually keep our old SNAP card and our fridge to remind us where we came from. We always just try to give back,” Fekete said.

Temple Terrace dedicates centennial mural

Original reporting by AJ Truscello

Temple Terrace revealed its views of the Terrace Mural on Saturday. The mural is located at the Omar k. Lightfoot Center on 56th Street. Public officials joined muralist Ameena Khan for the ceremony. Khan says the mural is important to the community.

“This type of mural, where volunteers come and help paint it, really helps ground the community and unites them, brings them together,” Khan said.

The dedication is one of the many ways Temple Terrace has been celebrating its centennial throughout the year. The city tied many of its annual events to its 100th birthday. Division Director Cori Collins says it’s been a fun celebration.

“Tying the centennial to each one of those events has been a chore, but it’s been a lot of fun, in letting the community know about how we turned 100-years-old,” Collins said.
